“It all started in 1895 when Rector Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x-rays…”

Azreen Hasan’s essay on the role of radiology in medicine begins with Roentgen and covers the impact of x-rays on healthcare. At the annual Radiology Competition last Spring organized by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), Azreen’s winning effort landed her a summer internship doing research in engineering. The high school junior from Manhattan’s High School for Health Professions and Human Services produced a study of the Measurement of Electrical Resistance with Paper Based Circuits for the Diagnosis of Urinary Infection, research that could lead to inexpensive diagnostic tools for developing countries.

The annual competition, Radiology: Giving Back to New York City, was launched in 2004 by Dr. Hedvig Hricak, Chair of the Department of Radiology at MSK, and is administered by Dr. Sara J. Abramson, Emeritus Attending and former Director of Pediatric Radiology,  and Dr. Jacqueline Bello. Some 30 faculty and staff members volunteer their time and talents every year. About 75 students from all five boroughs compete, and last year five received internships at MSK.

Sheila Fortunato, CTE Council Member and Grants/Program Manager for the Department of Radiology at MSK published an account of the competition on the prestigious Elsevier Connect journal:

High school essays lead to internships

The journal article includes Azreen Hasan’s 2015 essay as well as the 2014 essay winner Sarah Tress, formerly of Staten Island Technical High School and now studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
