Teachers trained intensively on-site with auto technicians for ten to sixty hours, and the training may be used by teachers towards receiving National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) credits.

ASE Boot Camp
ASEx74Through GNYADA, the UFT’s NICE Initiative and Lincoln Technical Institute, a three-day boot camp offered eight automotive teachers a chance to intensively prepare and learn testing strategies for  the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests.  A majority of participating teachers passed two or more tests, and three teachers passed all prerequisite tests for ASE certification.

Last month the Graphics Industry Advisory Commission launched the fourteenth Annual Citywide Graphic Arts Competition with a new category — Digital Illustration — joining Graphic Design (formerly Desktop Publishing & Design), Digital Photography, Package Design, Digital Video Production, Web Site Design and Student Filmmaking. In the on-line Qualifying Round ending April 22, teachers submit up to two students per category for consideration for the Finals. Click on the categories to see the rubrics for each contest.

At the Finals on June 5 at CUNY’s New York City College of Technology (CityTech), competitors will get new assignments that they must produce entirely on-site within the four-hour competition time limit. Trophies, cash and prizes go to the winners, and every participant brings home a gift bag. Major support for the Annual Graphics Competition comes from Adobe Systems Inc.

This month the Graphic Communications Scholarship Foundation posted the on-line applications for new and returning students. The Foundation provides financial support to New York City metro area students pursuing careers in graphic communications. The deadline for Scholarship Applications for the 2015–2016 school year is May 11, 2015.

The Graphics Commission in partnership with CityTech is offering CTE Graphics instructors a four-day training session, 6 hours a day, on July 13 through July 16 covering web site design fundamentals, skills that are essential to any student getting an entry level position or internship in a graphic arts, media and web design program. Following up his Election Day PD talk, Professor Dan Wong of CityTech will lead the sessions:

  • HTML/CSS: Zero to 60 mph
  • Content Management Systems and Implementation of WordPress
  • Analytics, Social Media, How the Internet Works
  • Developing Curriculum, Projects, and Web Design Assignments for High School Students

These classes will also prepare teachers for the CIW Web Site Development Associate certification.
