The new School for Tourism and Hospitality launched in the Bronx this month was covered in an article in Travel Weekly by  Kate Rice. New high school in New York focuses on hotel studies quotes prinicpal David Martin and describes the school’s partnerships with New York University, Sheraton, Benchmark Hospitality and NYC & Company, the city’s tourism organization.

Rice notes that students receive more than a New York State diploma:

New York has other high schools that focus on tourism and hospitality, such as the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism in Brooklyn and the Food and Finance High School in Manhattan. What differentiates the School for Tourism and Hospitality is the American Hotel and Lodging Association’s certification program. Martin said that the school’s focus is on hotels but that it plans to reach out to airlines and airports in the future.

Chopped TV

Lester Walker, a Park West High School graduate of C-CAP, the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program, will compete for the $10,000 top prize on the Food Network’s Chopped program:

FoodChopped is a cooking competition show that’s all about skill, speed and ingenuity where four up-and-coming chefs compete before a panel of three expert judges and take everyday items and turn them into an extraordinary three-course meal. Course by course, the chefs will be “chopped” from the competition until only one winner remains. The challenge? They have seconds to plan and 30 minutes to cook an amazing course with the basket of mystery ingredients given to them moments before the clock starts ticking! And the pressure doesn’t stop there.

Once they’ve completed their dish, they’ve got to survive the Chopping Block where our three judges are waiting to be wowed and not shy about voicing their culinary criticisms! Our host, Ted Allen, leads this high energy, high-pressure show which will have viewers rooting for a winner and cheering for the losers. CHOPPED is a game of passion, expertise and skill – and in the end, only one chef will survive the Chopping Block.

C-CAP founder Richard Grausman writes that the episode will air this weekend on the Food Network at the following dates and  times:

Saturday, April 14 at 9:00 pm

Sunday, April 15 at 12:00 am (midnight Saturday)

Sunday, April 15 at 3:00 pm

Good luck, Lester!

Students from the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Erasmus participated in job shadowing at the Sherry Netherland Hotel, the Roosevelt Hotel, and the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge during CTE Month. They learned about the history and the service standards of each hotel and toured each department to get first-hand experience of what happens in the front of the house as well as behind the scenes.

Hospitality and Tourism high school students toured the Roosevelt Hotel with Lidia Zoltowska and Ronald Blanchard, Assistant Directors of Human Resources.
